Doxycycline – Uses and Side Effects

Doxycycline belongs to the group of medications known as tetracycline antibiotics and it is used for treatment of bacterial infections like respiratory track infections and pneumonia. It is also recommended for people who have been exposed to anthrax as well as those suffering from acne, Lyme disease and infections.

Doxycycline works by thwarting bacteria growth and to prevent it from spreading and causing further damage to the body.

Doxycycline Side Effects:

Just like any other medicines, Doxycycline may also cause side effects. The common side effects are the following:

  • Diarrhea
  • Sore mouth
  • Itching of the vagina or rectum

There are also some symptoms that may be severe and you should consult your doctor immediately if you fell any of these serious side effects:

  • Skin rash
  • Hives
  • Blurred vision
  • Severe headache
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Sunburn or redness of the skin
  • Jaundice or yellowing of the eyes or skin
  • Persistent itching
  • Decrease in any of urination or urine getting darker in color
  • Lighter-colored stool
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea with Vomiting
  • Upset stomach/Stomach pain
  • General weakness
  • Fatigue or tiredness
  • Confusion

One of the most risky side effects is experiencing severe skin reaction that may cause fever, swelling of the tongue or the face, persistent sore throat, skin rashes that spread all over the body and a burning feeling in the eyes.

Important Information on Doxycycline:

There are differenets brands of Doxycycline and each may have its own instructions on how to take them. Some may be taken with food while others may be taken on an empty stomach.

Doxycycline capsule or pill should be taken whole. Do not take broken or crushed capsules. The pill comes in special coating designed to protect the stomach; taking crushed capsule may cause too much drug released at a time.

Liquid form of Doxycycline should be measured precisely using a medicine cup or a measuring spoon.

Doxycycline should be taken for the full prescription duration. Do not stop taking your medication even if your symptoms have improved. Doing so may cause your body to be resistant to antibiotic and further increase the infection.
